The activities of a number of hostile states pose no less a threat to Britain than terrorism. This position was expressed by the head of the British counterintelligence MI-5 Ken McCallum, his words are reported by The Guardian.
According to the publication, although the excerpts from McCallum’s statement do not name specific countries, we are talking, first of all, about Russia and China. In a comprehensive review of the issues of security, defense and foreign policy of the United Kingdom, the Russian side was compared with the “most acute direct threat” to London.
“We have witnessed how foreign undercover spies have made more than ten thousand attempts to establish relations with ordinary residents of the UK in order to manipulate them,” the head of MI — 5 noted. He called on the country’s authorities to raise awareness of citizens about the threats posed by hostile countries.
McCallum also pointed to the negative impact of the actions of foreign intelligence on the British employment market and scientific progress. According to him, large entrepreneurs and representatives of the scientific community of the United Kingdom should be vigilant and not allow the situation to worsen.
Before moving to the post of head of counterintelligence, McCallum was an investigator in the case of the poisoning of former GRU employee Sergei Skripal and his daughter. According to the British authorities, they were poisoned on March 4, 2018 with the Novichok nerve agent developed in the USSR as a result of an operation involving GRU employees. Moscow denies any involvement in the incident.
